A whitish or tan coloured goatfish with yellow chin barbels, a dark yellowish to brown stripe from the snout to the upper part of the caudal-fin base (stripe sometimes interrupted by brown blotches), a large dark spot on the tips of both dorsal fins, and dark bars on the caudal and pelvic fins. Individual fish may be mottled with brown to reddish blotches and spots, especially at night.
