Lake Wohrd (Wöhrder See)

The Wöhrder See (not to be confused with the Wörthersee) is a reservoir within the city limits of Nuremberg. It is approximately 2600 meters long, an average of 100–200 meters wide, and covers an area of 52 hectares. It is named after the Nuremberg district of Wöhrd.

In 1959, the Nuremberg City Council decided to create the Wöhrder See. It was completed in 1981. Before that, the Pegnitz River flowed through a floodplain in two arms, which was frequently flooded.

In addition to providing flood protection for old town, the Wöhrder See created a highly utilized recreational area and eliminated the bomb crater landscape in the Pegnitz meadows left behind by World War II.
