Cheek naked or partially scaled. Anal fin not edged with black. Many gold to white iridescent spots on upper side and head of the adult. Lateral profile over eyes usually concave.
Similar Species: Rock Bass (Ambloplites rupestris). Cheek completely scaled. Anal fin edged with black. No iridescent spots on upper side or head. Lateral profile over eyes usually straight.
North America: Gulf Slope from Apalachicola River drainage in Georgia to lower Mississippi River basin in Louisiana in the USA; St, Francis, Black, Arkansas, Red, and upper Ouachita River drainage in Missouri and Arkansas in the USA.

Inhabits brushy and vegetated, gravel-bottomed, sand-bottomed, and mud-bottomed pools of creeks and small to medium rivers. Feeds on small fish (darters, madtoms, minnows), crayfish, and larger insects including dragonfly, mayfly, and stonefly nymphs.
